Aim of Short talk: Main themes: Biblical references: Props: SHORT TALK: “WHO AM I?” (SHT038) To encourage people to think about their identity; who they really are “in Christ.” Identity, Child of God 1John 3:1a, 2Corinthians 5:17 A variety of hats eg. Policeman’s hat, Chef’s hat, Builder’s hard hat, Fireman’s hat, member of the Armed Forces hat, Magician’s hat etc. ........................................................................................................................ Could I have three volunteers please to come and wear a hat? (If possible choose a mixture of male and female)  Come and stand in a line and put on a hat. (Give each volunteer one of the hats you have collected) Now who can tell me something about the job that these men and women have because of the hat that they are wearing? (Receive answers as to the type of job the people have) So if I asked X, “Who are you?”.....he might say, “I am a policeman” (or one of the other jobs represented by the hat)  He might also say, “I am a husband” because he is married,  Or “I am a rugby player” because he plays for his local rugby team at the weekends. If I asked Y, “Who are you?” ..... she might say, “I am a chef” (or one of the other jobs represented by the hat)  She might also say, “I am a mum” because she has children,  or “I am a musician” because she plays the cello for an orchestra in her spare time.  or “I am rich” because she is! All of us through life search for who we really are,  and sometimes we can be tempted to think that we are defined by our job,  by what we own,  by what we like doing,  or by our relationships with other people. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and as our Saviour,  the Bible tells us that we become new creations. .....  We actually become sons and daughters of God. Listen to this: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1John 3:1) So instead of saying, “I am a policemen” or “I am a mother” or “I am rich”,  although all of those things might be true,  we can actually say, “I am a child of God”.......  for that is who we truly are. © Jane Hulme 2015 2 So who are you? (Encourage the congregation to respond)  “I am a child of God”  Who are you?  “I am a child of God” © Jane Hulme 2015 3
