The phrase the “glory of God” is often used by Christians, but frequently many of them have only a vague idea of its meaning. When one hears the word “glory' as employed in the average conversation we find that it is quite different from its original usage in both the Old and the New Testament. We are accustomed to think of glory as synonymous with praise. We hear such expressions as “That foot-ball player has earn ed a lot of glory" or “I think he is out for a lot of glory,” meaning by such statements the acquiring of praise, fame, and honor. Perhaps some Christians erroneously think of 'the glory of God' in the same sense. The word is used in Christian conversations. "We must do all for the glory of God,” is a common saying. Prayers are closed with, “And we will give thee the glory -- Amen.” Just what do we mean when we Christians use this word? It is possible that many have never stopped to analyze exactly what is meant. Perhaps some mean to give credit to God. This is well-meaning but it does not express the Biblical conception of “the glory of God.” 2. The Purpose of Study The purpose of this study is to examine the Biblical conception of the 'glory of God', and in.so doing discover a deeper comprehension of the character and purpose of God. An understanding of this concept is a key to many Scriptural passages. In our study of the “glory of God,” we will find that it contains within it some of the greatest themes of Christian Theology.
