Don’t Worry!
Theme: Don’t worry: God provides for our needs
Scriptures: Matthew 6:31-33
Prop: A dollar bill
Today we’re going to talk about one of my favorite subjects…(Hold dollar between your hands
and snap it a couple of times.) money! Do you like money? When you have money, what do you
do with it? Do you save it or spend it? What kind of things do you buy with it?
You must have heard people talk about how bad the economy is, right? It seems like every time
you turn on the television they’re talking about how bad the economy is. Well, when they talk
about the economy, do you know what they’re talking about? Money! (Snap dollar a couple of
times.) People are worried they won’t have enough money. Money to put gas in the car, money
to pay for the house, money to buy food and clothes. People are worried about not having the
things money buys.
But Jesus told us not to worry about things like that. In Matthew 6:31 he says, “Do not worry,
saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’…Your heavenly Father knows that you
need them.”
And then he tells us what we should think about instead. “But seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness and all these things will be given you.”
So Jesus says not to worry about food and clothing and all the things money buys. He said if we
put God first he’ll make sure we have all the things we need. It doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll
give us everything we want. But he promises to make sure we have everything we need.
I think that’s something we should pray about: Father God, thank you for taking care of us and
providing for all our needs. Please help us not to worry about money and the things that money
buys. Help us instead to focus on you and your kingdom and your righteousness. We thank you
in Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
Note: When I gave this message I was able to find coins at my local Christian book store that
had Bible verses on them. They were inexpensive reminders I could give to each of the children.
