Don't Get Caught!
Message: Say “No” to temptation
Scripture: Luke 22:40b
Prop: A fishing lure
I brought something to show you today. (Show lure.) Do you know what this is? It’s a
fishing lure. You tie this to your line, toss it out into the pond and drag it through the
water. When the fish sees it, he thinks it’s some kind of nice, juicy red and white fish and
he thinks, “Oh, boy! Just in time for breakfast!” He doesn’t notice the sharp hook on it, so
he tries to take a bite and – uh oh! – hooked! He’s caught! And then he becomes
breakfast. If he just kept his mouth shut, he wouldn’t get caught!
So a fisherman uses a lure to tempt a fish into biting. If the fish gives in to temptation, he
gets caught.
Well, Satan does much the same thing to us. He tries to lure us into sinning by making
things that are bad for us look good. And, by the way, Satan tempts everybody. In fact, he
even tempted Jesus. But Jesus said, “No” to Satan’s temptation. And he wants us to say,
“No”, too.
Let me read you what Jesus said about temptation in Luke 22, verse 40. It’s one of the
last things he said to his disciples. He said, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”
In other words, when you’re tempted to sin, don’t bite!
Let’s pray: Father God, We know that Satan is constantly tempting us to sin. So we pray
that we’ll remember to be like Jesus and always say, “No” to temptation. We pray this in
his holy name. Amen.
