Self-Cleaning Oven
Message: Only Jesus can wash away our sin
Scripture: I John 1:9
Six-year-old Tanya came home from school one day and noticed a big truck driving away from
her house. She ran inside and found her mom and said, “What’s going on, Mom? What was that
truck doing here?”
Her mom said, “They just delivered a new stove. And I’m thrilled because it has a self-cleaning
oven!”
Tanya had never heard of a self-cleaning oven before. It sounded a little weird! In fact, she was a
little afraid to look inside. She was afraid it would have two little arms holding scouring pads,
wiping down the inside of the oven!
What about you? Do you have a self-cleaning oven at home? And did you look inside to see if it
had two little arms holding scouring pads?
Well, Tanya’s mom explained that there were no little arms inside the oven. Instead, it used heat
and electricity to clean whatever mess might have been there from baking. It made her mom’s
job a whole lot easier.
Now, think about yourself: are you self-cleaning? I mean, when you get dirty, don’t you clean
yourself? Let’s say your hands get dirty, so you go to the sink, get them wet, add some soap, and
scrub them clean, right?
But what about our sins? Can we wash away our sins by ourselves? No! The Bible tells us that
only Jesus can wash away our sin. In the book of I John it says that if we ask for forgiveness, He
forgives us and washes away our sin.
So, when it comes to sin, we’re not self-cleaning, are we? So, if you sin, turn to Jesus, ask for
forgiveness, and He’ll wash away your sin completely away. (And He doesn’t even use soap and
water!)
