This Little Light of Mine
Theme: Being a light to the world
Scripture: Matt. 5:14-16
Props: A regular size light bulb and a small nightlight
I brought a friend of mine this morning. Here he is: Larry the Lightbulb! I’ll bet you have lots of
these all around your house, don’t you? Where are some of the places you have light bulbs?
(Kitchen, dining room, living room, etc.)
So we have light bulbs everywhere we need to have some light, right?
Here’s another friend of mine: Nancy Nightlight! Do you have any nightlights in your house?
Where do you have them? Most people have them in the bedroom.
Did you know that the Bible says that you and I are lights, too? Matthew, chapter 5 says, “You
are the light of the world.” But how can we be a light? The next verse tells us: “Let you light
shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” So by
doing good deeds we’re being a light to the world.
Looking at these bulbs, which one do you think might be brighter? Do you think that because it’s
bigger that means it’s more important? Well, look at Nancy Nightlight. She’s pretty small, but
she keeps me from stubbing my toe in the dark, and my toe thinks that’s pretty important!
And it’s the same with us. You may think that because you’re not very big your light is not very
important. But even if you’re small your good deeds are still helping God to light up the world.
That’s why all lights are important; not just big ones.
So we need to keep on doing good deeds so we can be lights that shine the way to Jesus. And
that’s something we should pray about: Father in Heaven, help us to continue to do good deeds
so that our light will shine before men and lead them to you and your Son, Jesus Christ. We pray
in His holy name. Amen.
