What’s That Flower Looking At?
Message: Keeping our eyes on the Lord
Scripture: Psalm 27:8
Prop: (Print out the attached picture of a sunflower.)
I have a picture of a flower to show you. [Show picture.] Do you know what kind of flower this is?
It’s called a sunflower.
It certainly looks like a sun, doesn’t it? But that’s not the only reason it’s called a sunflower. You
see, when it’s growing, the sunflower always faces the sun. It faces the sun when it comes up in
the morning, and as the sun moves across the sky all day, it constantly turns its head so it’s
always facing the sun. If you see a field full of sunflowers, you’ll see them all facing the same
way - they’re all facing the sun.
Sunflowers face the sun because they need the sun in order to grow. With the sun, they grow
tall and strong. Without the sun, they wither and die.
It makes me think of a hymn we sing sometimes. The words go like this: “Turn your eyes upon
Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light
of His glory and grace.” (Helen H. Lemmel)
You see, just as the sunflower constantly seeks the sun in order to grow and survive, we need
to constantly seek the Lord in order to grow and survive spiritually.
It means reading the Bible every day, it means learning all we can about Him, it means praying
to Him every day, and it means obeying His commandments.
Let me read you what it says in Psalm 27: “My heart says of you, ‘Seek His face.’ Your face,
Lord I will seek.”
So next time you see a sunflower let it be a reminder for us to keep our eyes on the Lord.
Let’s pray: Father God, whether in good times or in bad times help us to remember to keep our
eyes always focused on You and Your Son, Jesus. We pray this in His holy name. Amen.
