Brighter Than the Moon
Message: Reflecting the light of Jesus
Scripture: Matt. 5:16 “Let you light shine before men.”
Do you ever look at the moon? Have you noticed that it changes shape all the time? Sometimes
it’s just a little sliver, sometimes it’s almost completely dark and sometimes it’s a big bright
circle. Sometimes there’s kind of a ring around it that looks like a halo. And, of course, it there
are lots of clouds you can’t see the moon at all.
I like the moon when it’s big and bright because it gives off so much light. But that light doesn’t
come from the moon; it comes from the sun! You see, the moon doesn’t have any light of its
own. It reflects the light from the sun. In other words the light from the sun bounces off the
moon and that’s the light we see.
You know, you and I are kind of like the moon. The Bible says that Jesus is the light of the
world, and just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we should reflect the light of Jesus in our
lives. In Matthew, chapter 5, verse 16 it says, “Let your light shine before men.”
How do we do that? It’s simple: by showing love to God and to other people in everything we
say and do.
You see, when you look at the moon, you’re seeing the light of the sun. And when people look at
us, they should see the light of Jesus.
So the next time you look at the moon, ask yourself, “Am I reflecting Jesus’ light? If so, your
light will shine even brighter than the moon!
Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, Thank you for giving us Jesus, the light of the world. Please help us
to remember to reflect his light in everything we say and do. We pray this in his holy name.
Amen.
