It’s Just Way too Big!
Theme: You can’t measure God’s love
Scripture: Jeremiah 31:3
Props: A tape measure
This week I got a new tool. It’s a brand new tape measure. So I’ve been having a great time
measuring things.
For instance, how wide do you think that altar table is? Well, let’s see. (Measure it.) It’s 44
inches wide. How tall do you think it is? Let’s see…it’s 38 inches high. How about that chair?
Would one of you like to measure how wide that chair is? OK. (Measure a number of things,
including the height of some of the children.)
You know, there are tools for measuring just about anything. With a tape measure like this you
can measure how long or how wide something is. With a set of scales you can measure how
heavy something (or someone) is. We’ve got thermometers. What do they measure? In your car
there’s something called an odometer. Do you know what that measures? It measures how many
miles your car has gone. And how about a speedometer? It tells how fast your car is going.
So with the right tool you can measure just about anything. But there is one thing you can’t
measure: you can’t measure God’s love for us. It’s just way too big to measure! In Jeremiah 31:3
God says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” In other words, it goes on forever. And
you just can’t measure something that goes on forever.
And you can’t measure Jesus’ love for us, either. He gave his life for us. That’s something you
can’t measure.
Well, we can’t measure God’s love for us, but we certainly thank him for it, can’t we? Let’s do
that now: Heavenly Father, we thank you that your love for us so big that we just can’t measure
it. Please help us to remember to pass on some of that love to others. We thank you in Jesus’
holy name. Amen.
