A Taste of the Future

“Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”

Matthew 26:29

At the Last Supper, Jesus pointed to the meaning of his imminent death. Through the crucifixion of Jesus, a new covenant is established, in which we are forgiven because of his sacrifice. We have right relationship with God, not because of anything we do, but because of what Christ has done for us.

When we celebrate the Lord’s Supper, we pick up the themes of the Last Supper. We too focus on the meaning of his death, on forgiveness of sins, and on the new covenant we have with God. But sometimes we forget a crucial aspect of the Last Supper, that which points, not to the cross, but to the future. The cup reminds us, not only of the shed blood of Jesus, but also of the coming kingdom. Someday we will sit with Jesus at his table, sharing in his messianic banquet. In that day, creation will be renewed, and we will live in the fullness of God’s goodness. This hope, based on the sacrifice of Jesus, sustains us and motivates us in our discipleship.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION: When you participate in communion, do you ever think about the future? Do you long to share intimate fellowship with Jesus around his table? Does the hope of God’s future help you to live for him in the present?

PRAYER: Dear Lord, for your sacrificial death I give you thanks. My words cannot express my gratitude. How much I owe to you!

Yet, today I thank you, not only for your sacrifice in the past, but also for the hope of a future with you. How I long to meet you, to sit at the table with you, to talk with you as I do with a human friend! I look forward to experiencing the completeness of your kingdom, the new heaven and new earth.

In the meanwhile, I live with gratefulness for what you have done for me in the past, and with expectation for your glorious future. May this hope keep me going today and every day until I meet you face-to-face. Amen.
