This is a guided tour through music and arts coming from various Christian worship traditions around the world, plus a few other things of related interest such as multicultural musics.
Happy Epiphany!
Epiphany (Greek for epiphaneia, manifestation) is the holy day remembering Jesus Christ’s revealing to the world and has been celebrated since at least the mid-fourth century on January 6th. It remembers the revealing of Jesus as King and Messiah to the magi (and thus, to the Gentiles); the revealing of Jesus as the Son of God at his baptism; and the revealing of his ministry with his first miracle: turning water to wine at the Cana wedding.
I’m celebrating how Jesus has been revealed to people in India through the arts of India! You’re listening to the song ‘One Star Shines in the Sky,’ composed by Fr. Anil Dev and found on his album of Christmas songs I found recently in India at the Christian ashram he leads. It refers to the star led that the Magi from the east to come and worship the Christ child.
As well as gifting many Indian Christian composers to reveal and manifest Jesus through song, God has likewise gifted many Indian Christian artists to reveal and manifest Jesus through paintings. Here are some of my favorite paintings from India of the Magi - may we follow their lead to come and worship the Christ, adoring Jesus.
