God Was with Joseph

The LORD was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master.

Genesis 39:2

Although Joseph had been sold into slavery by his brothers and ended up as the property of Potiphar, an Egyptian official, nevertheless God was with Joseph. Thus everything he touched turned to gold, as it were. Of course this didn't mean his life was perfect. Joseph was, after all, a slave and an alien, far removed from his home and family. But God was with him, and this made all the difference.

Jesus, who is Emmanuel, "God with us," promised to be with us always (Matt. 28:20). Through the Holy Spirit, the Triune God dwells with us, encouraging us, guiding us, healing us, empowering us for ministry. Because God is with us, we can expect his help and his blessing. In fact, we can say with the Apostle Paul, "I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength" (Phil. 4:13).

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION: Do you live as if God is really with you? If you believed that God is with you today, how might you live differently?

PRAYER: Gracious God, even in his slavery, you were with Joseph, blessing his life and even those associated with him. When you are with us, it makes all the difference in the world.

Thank you, dear Lord, for the promise to be with us always. How grateful we are for your Spirit who dwells within us.

Help me to live this day as if you were truly with me. Give me boldness I wouldn't have on my own. Help me to be wise and patient. May your Spirit empower me to do your work today, wherever I am, for your glory. Amen.
