MEN’S DAY

MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES

Sunday, August 7, 2011

W. Patrick Alston, Guest Lectionary Liturgist
Coordinator of Worship Music and Accompaniment, Douglas Memorial Community Church, Baltimore, MD

Worship Planning Notes

Begin your service with a video presentation that includes men of your church who demonstrate the type of character and behavior indicated in our text (men are called to be temperate, serious, prudent; sound in faith, in love, and in endurance; self-controlled; and a model of good works; and in their teaching they are to show integrity, gravity, and sound speech that cannot be censured). Have your media ministry work in conjunction with your music ministry in preparing the video presentation. Members who would like the men in their families to be honored and featured should register at least 30–45 days prior to Men’s Day so that the video production team will have adequate time to prepare the video. Enhance the video with an appropriate music track or even a live musical selection that does not distract from the video. After the video presentation, have your worship leaders ready to proceed with the litany.

1. Litany

O Lord, today we celebrate you and the model you have set for us through the men of your kingdom.

Thank you, O Lord, for our grandfathers, fathers, uncles, brothers, and elders who teach us, guide us, and protect us.

Thank you for the women in our lives who sometimes have to fill these roles in the absence of our elder men.

Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.

They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.

Teach us your ways, O Lord, and we shall commit to them with sincere hearts.

O Lord, may we always be mindful to teach our children your ways and your Word.

We want to be the type of men who will stand for you no matter the circumstances. We want to be men of your Word and men who do your will. This is our earnest plea and our deepest desire.

Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, our strength and our redeemer.
