‘Oh Mercy’ (Audrey, Stu, Matt)

Today is ‘Divine Mercy Sunday’ in the Roman Catholic church calendar.  Here’s a suitable song - “Oh Mercy” by Stu Garrard and Matt Maher, & featuring some vocals from Audrey Assad.

This is from Stu G’s brand-new project on the Beatitudes.

Inspired by the Hunger and Thirst Beatitude for The Beatitudes Project - a book, album and film inspired by the surprising and subversive announcements know as The Beatitudes.

This project explores these “blessing at the bottom of life” through stories, songs and images. Stu Garrard invites us back on the hill in the 21st Century…to look beyond ourselves and towards a life connected with others and the amazing good news that God is on our side.

“Oh Mercy,” written by Garrard, Maher and Ian Cron, is inspired by Matthew 5, specifically, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” The song also “reflects on the ache for justice and wholeness; the wrestle with addiction and the longing for global and communal wrongs to be made right,” according to the press release.

“Oh Mercy” finds its inspiration from Nashville’s Thistle Farms, started by Becca Stevens, an Episcopal priest and one of CNN’s Heroes of 2016. Thistle Farms aims to “heal, empower and employ women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction,” according to its website.

Audrey Assad and Matt Maher, some of my favorite composers and worship leaders, recording the vocals for ‘Oh Mercy.’

The Roman Catholic church teaches some doctrine about ‘Divine Mercy Sunday’ which I have to personally reject, about indulgences and more. In this blog post I’m not promoting the theology behind the special day, but am definitely promoting the song above and art below, which are wonderful and point clearly to the Divine Mercy of Christ as believed in by all churches.

. She writes,

“O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.”

An inspirational drawing reflecting the hope and beauty of Divine Mercy enveloping the world. The Divine Mercy Chaplet is a set of Catholic prayers calling on the mercy of God; text above is from the opening prayer. I drew this when I was learning the prayer, and I still picture this drawing in my head when praying the chaplet to help me remember the order of the wording.
