Newborn at Christmas?

This Christmas can we find
a newborn love for Jesus?
Can this baby disarm us;
agendas, busyness and grudges
dropped on the ground?
Will we follow some sweet inner voice
urging us to go and see?
Can we go wondering,
unsure what we will find?
As we pass by all the places
we would expect to see God,
will something in us falter?
Will our preconceptions
about what God should be like,
what God must be like,
be suspended?
Could the presence of God
surprise us the very same way
we fall in love with a baby?
Will audacious beauty
and intense vulnerability
open something in us?
Will we be captivated into service,
commanded by delight?
At what exact point will we understand
that adoration is our natural state?
How could allegiance waver when our hearts
are totally surrendered?
Kneeling there, we wonder,
“Why should we ever leave?”
Meet us this Christmas, Lord Jesus,
in the face of every baby we meet
and in the intimacy of love newborn.
