LYRICS:
For the things we’ve done and left undone
For the ways we’ve wandered from your heart
Forgive us, we pray
Forgive us, we pray

For the idols we put on Your throne
For the loves we choose above Your own
Forgive us, we pray
Forgive us, we pray

Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy
Lord have mercy on us, on us

For the lies that we clutch to our chests
For the fear that wants to steal our breath
Forgive us, we pray
And give us Your grace

Forgiving God, forgiving us

“It is not lost on me that the man who yesterday murdered 6 Asian American women [plus 2 others] was a Baptist preacher’s kid. Or that Dylan Roof was raised in an ELCA church. Or that self-professed Christians built a gallows at the Capitol…” https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1847441158753283&id=510912415739504

Informative insights from Irene M. Cho:

For those who are tempted to buy into the narrative being spun that
-this was a unique incident,
-the white terrorist man (not kid) had a “bad day,”
-that he was a good Christian boy and son of a Baptist pastor therefore this is not normal,
-that this isn’t about racial hate but sex addiction,
-that this isn’t about racial hate but mental health issues,

You need to understand - fetishization IS racism. It IS white supremacy. It IS hate. It IS violence against Asian women.

Some, including the police and media, will try to say this wasn’t a race crime because the terrorist’s confession of being a sex addict. But IT ABSOLUTELY WAS. He fetishized Asian women. He didn’t target random massage parlors.

Don’t get confused. It took me a long time to dig in and understand this because how can liking something be wrong? How can exotification and fetishization be wrong when something is being glorified and celebrated? I didn’t understand too until I started doing the work.

We see this in white supremacy - the belief that Asian women are subservient and obedient to do their bidding. To be controlled.
It’s a perpetual othering in its twisted fantasizing and exotification.

We see this in white supremacy - this perpetuation of othering. White people obsessed and fascinated by black people’s hair and believing they have a right to just reach out and touch a stranger’s hair like they own them or they’re to be petted.

We see this in white supremacy with the commodification of foods and cultures - the belief that these exist for the enjoyment of white people.

No, these aren’t celebrations. This is white supremacy. This is othering. This is hatred even as it’s decorated as love or celebrate or obsession or fetishization.
And it is wrong.

And don’t bring in an argument of Asian women’s tendency to marry white men. That is an entirely different complicated issue of assimilation and needing to decolonize what we’ve been taught to elevate whiteness. It has NOTHING to do w the fetishization of Asian women.

We will see how the media begins to spin this in the coming hours and days, as we know bc the terrorist is a young white man, white supremacy in this country will protect him at all costs.

I don’t believe, after 4 years of a white supremacist racist administration and after an entire year of Trump screaming Chinavirus and Kung Flu, that justice will be served. Yet I still ever hold onto hope because otherwise I would be losing my soul and humanity to white supremacy and its hate it wishes to spread and poison everywhere.

This is what I carry today.
